Is there a Constrainedness Knife-edge?

چکیده

Recent work on search has identified an intriguing feature dubbed the constrainedness knife-edge by Walsh (Proc. AAAI98, 406–411) whereby overconstrained problems seem to become on average even more constrained as the search goes deeper, while underconstrained ones become less constrained. The present paper shows that while the knife-edge phenomenon itself is real, many of the claims that have been made about it are incorrect. It is not always associated with criticality, it is not a function of the problem so much as of the algorithm used to solve it, and it does not help to explain the peculiar hardness of problem instances near phase transitions. Despite the negative findings, the upshot is that Walsh’s work has opened a fascinating line of research which will surely repay further investigation.

The Constrainedness Knife-Edge

A general rule of thumb is to tackle the hardest part of a search problem first. Many heuristics therefore try to branch on the most constrained variable. To test their effectiveness at this, we measure the constrainedness of a problem during search. We run experiments in several different domains, using both random and non-random problems. In each case, we observe a constrainedness "knlfe-edge...

Derivation and validation of a sensitivity formula for knife-edge slit gamma camera: A theoretical and Monte Carlo simulation study

Introduction: Gamma cameras are proposed for online range verification and treatment monitoring in proton therapy.  An Analytical formula was derived and validated for sensitivity of a slit collimator based on the photon fluence concept. Methods: Fluence formulation was generalized for photons distribution function and solved for high-energy point sources. The...

Gamma Knife Simulation Using the MCNP4C Code and the Zubal Phantom and Comparison with Experimental Data

Introduction: Gamma Knife is an instrument specially designed for treating brain disorders. In Gamma Knife, there are 201 narrow beams of cobalt-60 sources that intersect at an isocenter point to treat brain tumors. The tumor is placed at the isocenter and is treated by the emitted gamma rays. Therefore, there is a high dose at this point and a low dose is delivered to the normal tissue surroun...

Knife-edge conditions in the modeling of long-run growth regularities∗

Balanced (exponential) growth cannot be generalized to a concept which would not require knife-edge conditions to be imposed on dynamic models. Already the assumption that a solution to a dynamical system (i.e. time path of an economy) satisfies a given functional regularity imposes at least one knife-edge assumption on the considered model. In particular, regular (quasi-arithmetic) growth requ...

Coupling of the interfacial and bulk flow in knife-edge viscometers

The operation of the knife-edge viscometer requires knowledge of the interfacial velocity profile in order to determine the viscous traction between the surface film and the knife edge and hence measure the surface shear viscosity of the film. The interfacial velocity profile can be obtained analytically in two limiting regimes. One is the limit of the surface shear viscosity going to infinity,...
